Energy Starts Here...

If you’ve heard me talk about aging robustly, you know I’m fascinated by the tiny power plants inside our cells: mitochondria.
They’re responsible for the energy that fuels our muscles, brain, and metabolism. And here’s the empowering part — they respond directly to how we live.

As we age, mitochondria tend to weaken. Part of this is simply wear and tear: years of metabolic stress, poor sleep, inflammation, and less movement can damage them. We also naturally lose muscle with age, and muscle is one of the biggest homes for healthy mitochondria. The good news? Our bodies are remarkably responsive — we can stimulate new, healthier mitochondria throughout life.
Here are the signals I try to give my mitochondria most days:
• I lift and move with resistance. Muscle contraction is one of the strongest signals to build new mitochondria and keep muscle strong as we age.
• I get my heart rate up with aerobic movement. A brisk walk, a hike, a bike ride — this teaches my cells to produce energy more efficiently.
• I eat enough protein. Aging muscle needs the raw materials to repair and maintain the cellular machinery that keeps us strong.
• I protect my sleep. Deep sleep is when the body repairs mitochondrial damage and resets for the next day.
• I get outside. Sunlight and fresh air help regulate the circadian rhythms that guide our cellular energy.
• I occasionally add a little stress — heat or cold. Sauna, a cold shower, even a brisk winter walk. These small challenges actually make our cells more resilient.
Yes, supplements can support mitochondrial health. But the most powerful signals we send to our cells are the daily choices we make.
Small shifts. Done consistently.
That’s how we think about aging robustly — from the inside out.
